Radioactive Releases in Japan Could Last Months, Experts Say

As the scale of Japan’s nuclear crisis begins to come to light, experts in Japan and the United States say the country is now facing a cascade of accumulating problems that suggest that radioactive releases of steam from the crippled plants could go on for weeks or even months.

The emergency flooding of stricken reactors with seawater and the resulting steam releases are a desperate step intended to avoid a much bigger problem: a full meltdown of the nuclear cores in reactors at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station. Read more at nytimes.com.

Japan Radiation Unlikely to Reach U.S., Say Officials

Radiation from nuclear plants damaged in Japan’s earthquake is unlikely to reach US territory in harmful amounts, US nuclear officials say.

“Given the thousands of miles between the two countries, Hawaii, Alaska, the US Territories and the US west coast are not expected to experience any harmful levels of radioactivity,” the federal Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) said in a statement. Read more at theaustralian.com/au.
